California Resources Agency Digital Media Wall Proposal - Kysa Johnson
ORIGIN STORIES - WATER, GOLD, BORON
PAST RELATED WORK
The three proposed animations will be a part of an ongoing series “The Long Goodbye”. This series uses the marks of subatomic decay patterns as a visual alphabet to create compositions based on Hubble Space Telescope imagery of the life cycle of stars. Pairing these two iterations of the same process of birth, transformation, decay and regeneration highlights how these processes echo across scale. Images of paintings from this series are below. In two recent solo shows I used this series to explore the creation of gold in the collision of neutron stars and the creation of hydrocarbons (which become the source of energy in oil) in nebula. There are installation shots from those two shows. There is also an animation of particle decay patterns which are the patterns that will be animated in the proposed works.
